NLP or Neuro-linguistic Programming is the study of “subjective experience and what can be calculated from it”. That’s a fancy way for saying NLP studies how people think, feel and use their bodies to produce specific results – the kind of results that make them stand out from their peers. And skilled practitioners of NLP are especially interested in exceptional performers. People who are the out liners, the mavericks, the achievers in every field of life, who achieve, experience and do things that so many other people can’t do. And from patterning what they do, we are able to distinguish what is the “difference that makes the difference” and then make that knowledge and strategies available to others.
It’s very cool and it’s enabled everyday people to achieve and do seemingly “unachievable” and “unbelievable” things in their own lives.

Case Example: Learning To Walk Again…
I’ve used it consistently to transform many aspects of my life. Perhaps the most rewarding of all changes was seven years ago when my mum was in a serious car accident and ended up with extensive brain damage. Laying paralyzed in intensive care, she woke up from nearly 1 month in a coma to discover she was unable to move and unbeknown to her at the time, her brain was described as being in a “vegetative” state.
Challenges don’t come much bigger than that.
Thinking back now its hard not to imagine what that must of been like for her. The fear, anxiety and huge uncertainty. However I knew that it was absolutely essential that the Doctors not tell her that she was paralyzed… because after many many years studying NLP and hypnosis I knew first hand the effect “negative suggestions” can have, how we are each bombarded with negative suggestions (often unintended) from others and so I was completely adamant that they would not tell her. If within a few months she couldn’t walk or recover I would tell her myself.
However she demonstrated a tremendous desire to heal, to recover and exuded many of the key attitudes taught inside this program, which start with learning to manage your own state.
I used my knowledge and skills with NLP, learnt first from applying NLP on myself, to help shape and direct her state, the meaning this new world of “not moving” meant and re-wired up new associations about what was possible.
Chances are you too have faced (or are facing) many challenges too. Yet there is a way to be resourceful no matter how challenging the circumstances.
As I think about the recovery my mum made, I feel a deep sence of immence gratitude and happiness spread over me.
From severe brain damage and not being able to move almost any of her body; she learnt to walk again. And so much more.

I have no doubt the knowing NLP helped influence a positive outcome for her. I knew then that NLP was going to be something I would use every day to continually improve every area of my life. It’s a technology I use every day to better my own life.
Going through that crisis re-affirmed my belief that “Circumstances do not make the man, they reveal him.”

What is NLP?
Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) is a pseudoscientific approach to communication, personal development, and psychotherapy created by Richard Bandler and John Grinder in California, United States, in the 1970s. NLP’s creators claim there is a connection between neurological processes (neuro-), language (linguistic) and behavioral patterns learned through experience (programming), and that these can be changed to achieve specific goals in life. Bandler and Grinder also claim that NLP methodology can “model” the skills of exceptional people, allowing anyone to acquire those skills. They claim as well that, often in a single session, NLP can treat problems such as phobias, depression, tic disorders, psychosomatic illnesses, near-sightedness, allergy, the common cold,and learning disorders. NLP has been adopted by some hypnotherapists and also by companies that run seminars marketed as leadership training to businesses and government agencies.
There is no scientific evidence supporting the claims made by NLP advocates, and it has been discredited as a pseudoscience. Scientific reviews state that NLP is based on outdated metaphors of how the brain works that are inconsistent with current neurological theory and contain numerous factual errors. Reviews also found that all of the supportive research on NLP contained significant methodological flaws and that there were three times as many studies of a much higher quality that failed to reproduce the “extraordinary claims” made by Bandler, Grinder, and other NLP practitioners.
